The main difference between Cuba and the U.S. regarding the treatment of artists is the amount of reverence paid towards culture makers. Here in the U.S., disposable entertainment is preferred over culture. In Cuba, culture is viewed as a necessity to preserve the nationalist mobilization of the revolution. In Havana’s Hamel alley, home to muralist Salvador Gonzales, artists and performers are brought together to build community by holding weekly parties. Havana artist Choco has become somewhat of a celebrity, appearing frequently on television and is stopped by people in the streets
