F Question

F news Question

By Mariya Strauss

Ever feel like some artists are more hype than substance? Ever walk into a museum and know deep down that your own feces would be more engaging than...the acclaimedfeces on display? F News wants to know who is the most overrated contemporary (as in past 2 decades) artist out right now (please limit to one). Extra points for being nasty.

I’d like to get dirty and smart Barney’s work. This t y p e of artist rides papa history with celebrity status akin to a Hilton sex tape. The question might be: Are we afraid of being shallow by not showing an appreciation for something that commands attention by intrinsic value through the witty use of art-historical iconography and a blend of the contemporary? Can’t someone with proper academic status call something a piece of shit without countering it with an argument that champions something else as IT? Art is nebulous—or is it not? Could the art world be fascist? Is our job as artists to undermine this system? Are we all predisposed to this fate as artists? Do I take myself too seriously?

One simple name... Pollock. Its about the “movement and action of painting.” When I look at his work I think it is about ripping off stupid rich people who are looking for a new status symbol and attempting to prove that they are more than consumer driven drones.

Thomas Kinkade has ruined my mother. She has a painting of a comfy house and the matching wallpaper border. It has to stop.

Is it too corny to counter this question next time with something like, who’s most inspiring artist and why? Who keeps the dream alive in these dark and brutal times and how? Like, big props go out to__________? Like, you may never have heard of this person but you should check him or her out__________? Is that too un-nasty or what?

I don’t know. Tell me.
