Frida Kahlo Unmasked: Portraits by Various Photographers - An exhibit showing all the captured sides of this beautiful Mexican artist and tortured feminist icon from working artist to lover to friend. Photographers in the exhibition include Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Emmy Lou Packard, Diego Rivera, Fritz Henle and others.
The show is on view at the Mexican Fine Arts Center at 1852 West 19th Street.

The Short Century: Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa, 1945-1994 - Curated by African scholar Okwui Enwezor, this exhibition features the work of artists from several different nationalities who each have their own stories and experiences to communicate about liberation movements in Africa. Short Century hopes to educate viewers about the changing political, social and cultural identity of contemporary Africa and serves to bridge the cultural gap between Africa and the U.S..
The exhibition will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Sept. 7-13

Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine - A film by Bahman Farmanara about a fifty-five year-old filmmaker who confronts a fear of death by making a film about his own funeral. Farmanara has been likened to Bergman, Fellini and Woody Allen by various critics. This film won awards at the Berlin, Istanbul and Montreal International Film Festivals. If you missed this film in the October Gene Siskel Film Center's Iranian Film Festival, here is another chance to catch it or to catch it again.

Sept. 6-9

Bharatanatyam in the Diaspora - Spiritual, Classical and Contemporary - A major international conference on Indian dance sponsored by the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago and Natya Dance. Includes two performances by Chandralekha and Dancers, featuring the international premiere of Sharira-Fire and Desire. Chandralekha, India's most controversial choreographer according to the Dance Center, broke new ground in the 1980s when she merged traditional Easter and modern Western forms.
September 8 at 8 p.m. and September 9 at 3 p.m. at The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue.
The conference will also present a keynote address, discussions, workshops and showcase performances.

Missing Parts - A play out of order, written and directed by Neo-Futurist Sean Benjamin. For their first show of the 2001-2002 season, the Neo-Futurists present a dark comedy in which people are lost in their own black-and-white world where time fluctuates and questions are answered before they are asked. This is Benjamin's second full length play, following 2000's Devolution.
Thurs., Fri, Sat, Sept. 6 - Oct.13, 8 p.m. at the Neo-Futurarium, 5153 North Ashland at Foster.

Listen to Africa - A collaborative Conference presenting African perspectives on health, environment and economic development. Forty grassroots innovators from 20 African countries gather at Hyatt Regency Chicago to discuss problems plaguing the African continent. The focus of the meeting is the relationship between health, the environment, and the economy. Another topic on the agenda is the impact of AIDS on the African workforce, the ability of water conservation and resource projects to spur a community's economy, and the effects of African debt reduction and government policy on health care.

The Short Century - Carol Becker, Dean of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Okwui Enwezor, Artistic Director of Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany, will engage in a dialogue about The Short Century, the first major survey to examine how liberation movements and art have been bound together in the forging of a new culture. Enwezor is also founder of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art.
The dialogue will take place at 2 p.m. at the MCA.

3rd Annual World Music Festival: Chicago 2001 - A celebration of music from around the world, this is a multi-venue festival showcasing traditional and the contemporary music of cultures from around the world. Events take place at the Chicago Cultural Center, The Field Museum, HotHouse, the Old Town School of Music, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Daley Center, and other sites.
